Abstract

Chapter three of On the Road to Reading provides effective one-on-one tutoring strategies for helping a child become an engaged reader and writer. Effective practices include focusing on and planning for each child, actively involving the child in many kinds of learning, and providing encouragement and support.

Issue

Developing an enthusiastic and engaged young reader poses multiple challenges for novice and experienced tutors (as well as the development of the program-training plan). While children share certain developmental and cultural traits, each child is unique and tutors must shape their approach to best meet the child's needs.

Whether imparting new knowledge, teaching new skills, or changing attitudes and behavior, reading tutors can benefit by following these effective practices:
  • Follow an agenda for each session.
  • Tailor the agenda to each child's unique characteristics.
  • Adjust the plan if needed.
  • Focus on learning.
  • Form a partnership with the child's family.
  • Keep in touch with the child's teacher.
  • Expose the child to many kinds of reading and writing materials.
  • Show the child how you use language for different reasons.
  • Get the child actively involved.
  • Expect that most children can learn to read and write.
  • Make the child a partner in the tutoring process.
  • Offer support throughout the learning process.
  • Help the child use language skills in functional and realistic ways.
  • Give children feedback about their learning.
  • Encourage the child to think and problem solve.
  • Help each child experience success.
  • Offer genuine praise for efforts and accomplishments.
  • Build trust and respect.

Context

Children who are read to often learn to value books and reading. Children who enjoy reading are likely to read more often. Children who read more often continue to improve their reading skills and overall school performance. Tutors can play a significant role in helping children discover the pleasures of reading.
