Securing additional resources for sustainability
Abstract
Most national service programs operate with very limited funds and are looking for cost-effective ways to manage multiple tasks related to sustainability, without increasing staff burden. This effective practice from Project TASC, Aguirre International, presents ways to secure needed resources to conduct tasks for program sustainability.Issue
Ensuring program sustainability shouldn't put an unnecessary strain on staff and volunteers, but can be a part of normal work flow processes with proper knowledge and planning.
Action
According to Project TASC:- Work closely with students and faculty at a local university or with staff from other local agencies to assist in staffing and implementing program management roles and tasks.
- Employ a paid staff member who is responsible for managing volunteers, especially when recruiting volunteers is a key program goal.
- Use professors and students to help design and conduct evaluation studies.
- Solicit campus radio or TV stations to assist with advertising and outreach.
- Have students design marketing plans for advertising approaches (some professors will allow this as part of coursework).
- Borrow high-level, in-kind staff from other local agencies or service programs.
Context
Additional resources for sustainability activities may be easier to find than you think. Look locally for volunteer staff and consultants at colleges, universities, or other service agencies.Posted On
