Youth Helping America - Building Active Citizens: The Role of Social Institutions in Teen Volunteering

Highlights the state of youth volunteering and considers the relationships between youth volunteer behavior and three primary environments where youth form their social networks: family, religious organizations, and school. Presents key findings from a survey of 3,178 Americans between the ages of 12 and 18 who were asked about their volunteer activities and experiences. Marks the first step in developing a comprehensive model of volunteering behavior among youth that will include other factors such as race, gender, age, income, and other household factors.

Increasing energy conservation awareness in elementary school students

An energy education program — Knowledge Is Power! (KIP) — in California's Ojai Valley, uses peer to peer interaction and experiential learning to educate elementary school students. A marionette show, interactive solar-powered laboratory, energy footprint project, and a school energy audit are all part of the curriculum. Educational consultant Michael Stark submitted this effective practice in August, 2003 as part of a project for CalServe.

Increasing participation at service-learning fairs by choosing an appropriate name for the event

Besides recruiting volunteers, service-learning fairs can exist as a forum for educating students about the big picture of civic engagement, social issues and careers in the nonprofit field. Choosing the right name for the event can certainly help to increase turnout. These ideas were shared in March 2006 on the HE-SL (service learning) e-mail discussion list, hosted by The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse.

Assisting underperforming students with after-school service-learning

In junior high and elementary schools, after-school service-learning can work effectively as part of a larger overall systems-change initiative. By providing after-school enrichment for students who are at risk of academic failure, as well as promoting civic involvement and career exploration, scholastic performance can improve. Ellen Lewis, of Petaluma (California) City Schools, submitted this effective practice, which includes an example of a service-learning project addressing homelessness.

Using California State Parks as a service-learning resource

California State Parks offers educators a unique opportunity to establish service-learning projects. For example, the Dunes Restoration Project, a partnership between the California State Park Service and all sixth grade students at Carpenteria Middle School, helps the State Park Service restore the local dunes at Carpinteria Beach. Educational consultant Michael Stark submitted this effective practice in August, 2003, as part of a project for CalServe.

Educating students about conservation with a multi-disciplinary service project

The Salmon and Trout Education Program (STEP) is a hands-on curriculum that uses a thematic approach to the preservation of salmon and steelhead trout. The program was originally developed for use in the elementary science and social studies content areas; however the activities can easily be adapted to intermediate and secondary high school levels. The STEP program is multi-disciplinary with curriculum links to language arts, geography, reading, and art. A similar program is sponsored by the California Department of Fish and Game. Educational consultant Michael Stark submitted this effective practice in August 2003 as part of a project for CalServe.

Providing educational enrichment for students expelled from traditional school settings

Middle school students who have been expelled from Metropolitan School District in Indianapolis are given the chance to reenter the district without falling behind in school. The non-traditional Opportunity School Program provides academic and social skills development, as well as service-learning activities, to keep students on track. This effective practice was shared by Kristine Myers, Youth Support Administrator of Opportunity School.

Creating buy-in among students of service-learning

Research shows that students who participate in high quality service-learning experiences typically become more engaged in learning as shown by increased attendance and motivation to learn. But how do educators "sell" the idea in the first place? This effective practice offers suggestions shared on the K12-SL (service-learning) e-mail discussion list in August 2005.

Developing character education book lists to build civic responsibility and increase literacy in a community

Each year students and teachers in the Lake-Lehman School District (PA) build capacity for service-learning by taking part in Project GIVE (Gaining Insights with Volunteer Experiences). During academic year 2003-2004, elementary school students reviewed books with the theme of character education; created book lists for parents; developed book centers; and learned about the history of Pennsylvania. Students with disabilities from grades K-4, teachers, local high school students, parents and members of the community collaborated to make the project a success; addressing the issue of civic responsibility, improving literacy rates, and knowledge about the community. Kathy Finnerty submitted this effective practice in May 2005. The book list that students created for academic year 2004-2005 is provided.

Integrating service-learning in individual educational plans for primary school students with disabilities

Including service-learning activities in a student's individual education plan (IEP) is one way to maximize the impact that service-learning can have on students with disabilities. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts have increased the participation of students in national and community service with their emphasis on an integrated service-learning curriculum in primary and secondary schools. Mat McCollough of the National Service Inclusion Project submitted this effective practice in November 2003.

During the summer of 2002, teens from all over the country traveled to the 87,000 acre Chico Basin Ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serving as ranch hands to accomplish much-needed manual labor for the working cattle ranch, which is owned by the State of Colorado for education, recreation, and conservation. The teens learned about the environment, gained service-learning credits, and developed lasting friendships as a result of their community service.

Developing civic service with a teen corps

Middle and high school students are searching for ways to contribute to their communities and their nation. The Teen Freedom Corps (TFC) provides a means for teens to channel their civic energies. Inspired by the USA Freedom Corps, the Teen Freedom Corps was officially launched after a countywide conference at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, New Jersey, on April 12, 2002. Lynn Feldman of Northern Highlands Regional High School submitted this effective practice in March 2002.
