Matching college students with the numerous opportunities for community volunteerism can be challenging without appropriate systems in place. Michigan Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA members, serving with the Community Service Learning Center at Grand Valley State University, created a database-driven website to ensure that volunteer matching is easy and efficient. Stephanie Kroll submitted this effective practice in September 2005, based on experiences during her service term.

The Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism in Maryland distributes a "Training Brief" with professional development and training events occurring in the state. The newsletter is faxed and e-mailed to AmeriCorps programs, InterCorps Council participants, volunteer coordinators, and commissioners. The newsletter helps funnel information about training opportunities to individuals who may otherwise not know about them.

Creating follow-up e-mail for online applicants

Often applicants submit online applications to AmeriCorps or AmeriCorps*VISTA without a full understanding of the program or its requirements. Habitat for Humanity of Colorado sends online applicants a follow-up e-mail with program basics, locations, start dates, more detailed job requirements, and a list of short-answer questions. Only applicants who reply to the e-mail are considered for phone interviews.

Using literature to connect girls and teach technology

According to a study by the American Association of University Women, girls rate themselves much lower than boys on computer ability and use computers less than boys outside of school. To address this inequality, the Read n' Rap program in Iowa was developed to integrate reading and technology. Girls in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade are paired with high school girls to read and discuss novels via e-mail. This practice was submitted by the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency in November 2001.

Recruiting online volunteers can be a great way to add new talent and experience to a volunteer program. Jayne Cravens, online volunteering specialist at United Nations Volunteers and former project manager for the Virtual Volunteering Project, recommends creating a detailed online application and orientation process to weed out potential candidates who may not be ready to make a serious online volunteering commitment.
